Comporta, translates as ‘a gate that holds back water’. Sheltered from the Atlantic breeze by towering sand dunes, rice paddies stretch out south from the Sado estuary, cris-crossed with irrigation canals, the area thrums with life even in the hottest of summers. More than 250 species of migratory bird visit the area each year.
Dotted with cork oaks and pine forests, vivid wildflowers shoot up from sandy soil and the fields bulge with sweet ripe vegetables for harvest. The unique architecture of low-slung cabanas with grass thatch and pine beams is conserved.
Days are centered around the beach, whether surfing, strolling or bathing, there is 65 kilometers of uninterrupted powdery, golden sand to explore.
